Coming Home
Frequently Asked Questions
The American Red Cross, with support from Walmart, has developed the Coming Home Series, Presented by Walmart for military families to assist them in transitioning back to life at home after deployments.
- This is a free and confidential program to help those facing challenges in returning to family life, their jobs, and living again in their community.
- Modules are offered in small groups and participants can choose from a selection of course topics that interest them.
Transitioning back home after a deployment can be hard, and many service members have experienced challenges readjusting into life with their families, their jobs and their communities. Thanks to the generosity of the Walmart Foundation, this new Red Cross program will help ease that transition.
While many service members and families successfully readjust to their lives at home, others may experience difficulties that include:
- Readjusting to partners who assumed new roles during the separation
- Engaging children who have matured and may resent additional oversight
- Reestablishing bonds with their spouse and children
- Readjusting to the returning service member
- Realigning the family decision-making process
- Redefining the family routine
- Changes in their jobs and finances
- Managing concerns that may be prevalent after deployment, such as Post-traumatic stress (PTSD); traumatic brain injury and depression
In our Coming Home Series, Presented by Walmart, trained Red Cross mental health volunteers will lead small groups through activities to help service members and their families make the transition to civilian life.
Workshop topics currently include:
- Communicating Clearly
- Exploring Stress and Trauma
- Identifying Depression
- Relating to Children
- Working Through Anger
Coming Home Series, Presented by Walmart is for active duty service members of all Armed Forces branches, as well as Reserve, National Guard, veterans, and their families.
- The program helps service members and their families know what to expect, and offers specific strategies to make the transition home easier.
- The new Coming Home Series, Presented by Walmart complements another Red Cross course for members of the military and their families - the Coping with Deployments: Psychological First Aid for Military Families course which provides strategies for building resiliency and coping with deployment challenges across the deployment cycle.
