Operation Homefront of North Carolina has an upcoming volunteer opportunity in your area: Freedom 5K Run and Walk.

The purpose of the Freedom Walk and Run is to raise fund to provide Thanksgiving meals to our military families across North Carolina. Operation Homefront of North Carolina’s goal is to raise a minimum of $20,000 in order to provide a minimum of 400 meals to military families of all the armed services - Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, National Guard, Reserves and Coast Guard.

You MUST have a volunteer liability waiver on file with Operation Homefront in order to volunteer. If you do not have a waiver on file and are interested in volunteering, please complete this document and return by fax or email to or 704-527-4503.

WHEN: Thursday, September 1, 2011 from 10:00am – 12:00; 12:00 – 2:00pm; 2:00pm- 4:30pm; 4:30 – 7:00pm
WHERE: Run For Your Life, 2422 Park Road, Charlotte, NC 28203
Position: Packet pick up at Run For Your Life. Distribute running bibs and t-shirts to runners.
Volunteers needed: 2 per shift

WHEN: Friday, September 2, 2011 from 10:00am – 12:00; 12:00 – 2:00pm; 2:00pm- 4:30pm; 4:30 – 7:00pm

VOLUNTEER JOB DESCRIPTIONS:
WHEN: Saturday, September 3, 2011; see job descriptions below for times
WHERE: Freedom Park, 1900 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC

Position:  Registration Volunteer
Volunteers needed: 10
Responsibilities: Assist registration of runners.  Take registration form; review for signature, completeness, and legibility.  Collect money and assign bib number.  The bib number must be recorded on the registration form.  Hand out bib, race bag, and T-shirt.  At 8:00 AM, breakdown registration table; clean area and box leftover registration forms. 
Time Commitment: 5:45 AM to 10:00 AM

Position:  Packet Pickup Volunteer
Volunteers needed: 10
Responsibilities: Divide bib numbers alphabetically four ways: A-G, H-L, M-R, and S-Z.  There should be volunteers assigned to looking up the bib number while the other volunteers get a T-shirt and race bag for the runner.  At 8:00 AM, breakdown packet pickup table; clean area and box leftover packets, race bags, and T-shirts. 
Time Commitment: 5:45 AM to 10:00 AM

Position: Chip Pickup
Volunteers needed: 10
Responsibilities: Hand out Champion Chips according to bib numbers.  The chip number must correspond with the bib number.  At 9:00 AM, head to the Finish Line to assist with Chip Collection. When runners begin to finish, chips will be return to you to place back in the containers. After chips are placed back in order, return to EMS staff. 
Time Commitment: 5:45 AM to 10:00 AM.

Position: Course Monitor Volunteer
Volunteers needed: 15
Responsibilities: Volunteer must arrive at 6:30 AM to check-in.  At 7:30 AM, you will head to your assigned location along the course.  You will be responsible for motivating, cheering, and encouraging runners and walkers for the duration of the race.  Assist with the safety of runners by ensuring that they follow the course of the race or the calling of medical attention if a participant needs assistance.
Time Commitment: 6:30 AM to 10:00 AM

Position: Water Station
Volunteers needed: 7
Responsibilities: Responsible for the pouring of water.  Once the table is full, place a layer of cardboard on top of the water and make another layer of cups.  When handing the drinks to the runners, hold the cups by the rim so runners can grab the base.  Some volunteers will be responsible for keeping the road clear of all cups/debris.  After all runners pass, clear the area of all cups/debris.  Pour out any excess water, fold tables, and leave in designated area for pickup. 
Time Commitment: 6:30 AM to 10:00 AM

Position: Finish Line Refreshment/Food Volunteer
Volunteers needed: 5
Responsibilities: Assist with the placement of PowerAde in the blue bins with ice, cutting/slicing of bagels, oranges, bananas, and any other food for the runners.  Volunteers must make sure that boxes are fully stocked with food and available to all runners.  Please monitor the consumption of product, i.e. do not allow runners to take several items so we can insure that all runners will receive product.
Time Commitment:  6:00 AM to 9:00 AM
